Doctors

Doctors 11th May 2010

We are thankful for our doctors and nurses and we all have stories we could tell, good and the not so good! Now you may have some issues with the National Health Service, your local surgery or hospital, but compared to other countries we are extremely blessed. I have been places where there are no doctors, hospitals, medicines or even basic health care and believe me, be thankful for what you have. I am a very healthy person, I do however, on occasion, have to visit with a doctor. I take the advice, the medication, the injections (Usually for overseas trips where inoculation is compulsory) and for the regular tests which are recommended for the over 60’s!!!! (On that subject I would like to ask the person who ‘set me up’ with Saga chair lifts, orthopedic beds, free loft insulation, hearing aids and the other stuff I have been getting through the post, please get me off the mailing list!!)

Some people complain about the length of time they have to be in the waiting room, but I don’t mind that, it gives me the opportunity to zone out with a magazine, even if it’s last year’s issue, and It’s amazing what you hear while you are in the hospital or local surgery waiting area. Many people, bless their hearts, are eager to share with a complete stranger, about their sicknesses, operations, near death experiences and the like! These conversations are not for the squeamish or the faint hearted and if the sight of blood, even if imagined, causes you to hyperventilate, then I suggest you find a quiet corner and hook up with your ipod!

Apart from having our children, I have only been in hospital twice, and both times for surgery. My experiences were not unpleasant and I quickly recovered and have never felt better. I am not someone who takes delight in rehearsing all the different ailments they have. I do have compassion for people who are working through difficult and painful things in their bodies, but there are those who seem to revel in their infirmities. There is a Proverb which says, A merry heart does good like a medicine, but heaviness rots the bones. I do believe that laughter is one of life’s healing balms and it has no unpleasant side effects!

Some things which were spoken over unconscious patents while in surgery.

Better save that. We'll need it for the autopsy.

Wait a minute, if this is his spleen, then what's that?

Oh no! I just lost my Rolex.

Oops! Hey, has anyone ever survived 500 ml of this stuff before?

Everybody stand back! I lost my contact lens.

Seriously, I thank God for all those dedicated doctors and nurses who help us to stay alive and give us the best care they can. Life is so daily and we need to be thankful for good health. Do what you can and trust God to do what you can’t.
